6. Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby G. C. B.2,6,14 was born on 27 April 1785 in Winwick, Warrington, Lancashire, England. He was born on 27 April 1785 in Somerton, Somerset, England. He was christened on 29 May 1785 in Winwick, Lancashire, England. Phipps died on 19 March 1867 at the age of 81 in Littlegreen. He held the title of Sir Knight. G.C.B., of Winwick Cottage Warrngton, and subsequently of Littlegreen and of Lordington, Chichester, Sussex. Entered Royal Navy as Midshipman, 1797, and served in H.M. Frigate Latona under Capt. John Bligh. Then served in H.M. Ships Romney, Agincourt, Active, Theseus, Santa Margarita, Leviathan and Victory. Promoted from H.M..S. Victory to acting lieutenancy in H.M.S. Excellent, 1804. Served in operations in capturing Capri, 1806. Also served on shore at defence of Gaeta. Then served in H.M.S. Swiftsure, and took command of H.M.S. Duchess of Bedford, 1806. In this capacity, engaged two privateers off Gibraltar in same year. Served in H.M.S.Minorca, 1807. In 1810 had temporary command of H.M.S. Fame off Toulon. Then in command of H.M.S. Volage in defence of Slcily aginst Murat and in Hoste's victory of Lissa, 13 Mar. 1811. Received Admiralty Gold Medal. In command of H.M.S. Stag during voyage to Cape of Good Hope, 1812. In 1814 had command of H.M.S. Spartan in Mediterranean, and was employed as senior officer in conjunction with Tuscan land-force to secure accomplishment cf treaty stipulative of surrender to Tuscany of Elba by French. Received from Tuscan Govt. Cross of Imperial Order of St. John of Wurtzbourgh. C.B., 1815. unemployed, 1816-32. Superintendant of R.N. Hospital and Victualling Yard at Plymouth 1832. In command of William and Mary Yacht, and Supt. of WooIwich Dockyard, 1838. Comptroller-General of the Coastguard, 1841-46. C-in-C in the Pacific (H.M.S. Asia), 1847-50.* A Lord of the Admiralty, 1851-52. K.C.B., 1852. Stood as Parlty. candidate for Lyme, 1852, but was defeated. Admiral, 1858. G.C.B., 1861. Succeeded by the will of his godfather, Thomas Peckham Phipps, Esq., of Littlegreen, to the Littlegreen and Lordington estates in Sussex, 1837.

* Hornby Island, in the Strait of Georgia, off Vancouver Island, Canada, was named after Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby, from his time as C-in-C on the Pacific Station. The name was given by the officers of the Hudson's Bay Co. c. 1850. Lady Maria Sophia Burgoyne and Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby G. C. B. were married on 22 December 1814 in Woodmansterne, Surrey. England.
