THE RIGHT REVEREND THOMAS HOWARD BIRLEY, M.A., EDUCATED AT RADLEY, CUDDESDON AND CHRIST CHURCH, OXFORD. HE SPENT 8 YEARS OF HIS MINISTERIAL LIFE AT ST. SAVIOUR'S, ROATH, CARDIFF, IN WALES. IN 1896 WAS APPOINTED VICAR OF ST. THOMAS', OXFORD. IN 1908 HE VOLUNTEERED FOR WORK IN CENTRAL AFRICA. IN 1911 APPOINTED ARCHDEACON OF ZIGUALAND, TANGANYIKA TERRITORY, EAST AFRICA. HE WAS ONE OF THE MISSION PARTY WHO WERE TAKEN PRISONERS BY THE GERMANS, AND KEPT IN CONFINEMENT FOR NEARLY 2 YEARS. IN 1925 HE OBTAINED HIS D.D. FROM THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, WHO NOMINATED HIM TO THE SEE OF ZANZIBAR, VACANT BY THE DEATH OF DR. WESTON, AND WAS CONSECRATED BISHOP ON 11 JUNE 1925, IN WESTMINSTER ABBEY.
