In Mr. William Hornby's research, (referenced here as "Hornby Research") this individual is firmly connected to his son Geoffrey, but begins with some speculation about Hugh's ancestry. "The second main family group - the HORNBYS of BANKFIELD, POULTON-LE-FYLDE, SCALE HALL, and WINWICK, and subsequently of DALTON HALL, LITTLEGREEN and LORDINGTON - traces its descent from [this] HUGH HORNBY, Esq. who was probably a kinsman of a John Hornby, yeoman, of Singleton Grange, (Will, 1649), and of another Hugh Hornby, who held a messuage in Singleton Grange and died in 1638, leaving "a son and heir, John, aged 40". The younger Hugh Hornby inherited the Bankfield estate from his sister. He was rated to find service and men of arms, and was ruined by the Civil Wars. Before his death he was forced to sell the Bankfield estate to the Harrison family." Children were:
